Hidden 'uranium hotspot' offers new clues to Scotland's ancient past

University of Aberdeen researchers have discovered a hidden 'uranium hotspot' beneath Aberdeen, shedding new light on the geological history of the region. The discovery was made using a technique called 'borehole gamma-ray logging.'

The uranium hotspot is located about 300 meters below the surface and is thought to have formed around 40 million years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow sea.

The findings, published in the journal Geological Society, London, Special Publications, provide new insights into the geological evolution of the region and the processes that led to the formation of the UK's oil and gas reserves.
