This 160-Million-Year-Old “Squid” Fossil Is Unlike Anything Scientists Have Seen

Two rare fossils found in Wyoming have revealed a new species of belemnite, an extinct relative of squid and octopuses, named Wyoteuthis linsterorum. This species lived about 160 million years ago and is notable for its chunky size, unlike other belemnites typically found with slender, bullet-shaped fossils. The discovery challenges the previously held belief that this family of animals had vanished millions of years earlier.
