An International Career Forged by the Struggles of Apartheid

Navi Pillay, a prominent human rights lawyer and judge, has been awarded the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize for her decades-long fight against racism and her advocacy for justice and human rights, particularly in her native South Africa during the apartheid era.

Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is the first South African to receive the prestigious award since Nelson Mandela in 1993.

The Nobel committee praised Pillay's 'unwavering commitment to human rights, justice, and the rule of law' and her 'courageous defense of the rights of women, children, and marginalized groups.'

Her career has spanned over four decades, during which she has served as a judge in South Africa and internationally, and has been a vocal critic of governments that violate human rights.
