The Fossil Record May Be Missing 200 Million Years of Animal History

Scientists have discovered that the fossil record may be missing up to 200 million years of animal history. A fossil deposit in Mongolia has revealed microscopic organisms with detailed cellular structures, including some that resemble embryos. However, none of the fossils can confidently be identified as belonging to a specific known species.
