‘Does a PSA level of 28.9 indicate prostate cancer?’
A man asks about the significance of a high PSA level in a prostate cancer screening test.
PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a protein produced by the prostate gland. An elevated PSA level can indicate the presence of prostate cancer, but it can also be caused by other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or a prostate infection.
While a PSA level of 28.9 is high, it does not necessarily mean that the man has prostate cancer. Further testing, such as a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate biopsy, would be needed to confirm a diagnosis.
Prostate cancer is a common type of cancer in men, with the American Cancer Society estimating that about 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
