In-Water Survey (IWS), in lieu of dry docking of cargo vessels.
Key Changes and Requirements
1. In-Water Survey (IWS) for ESP Vessels
Vessels under the Enhanced Programme of Inspections (ESP) of 15 years and older must have their bottom inspected in dry-dock during intermediate and renewal surveys.
2. IWS for Other Vessels
Vessels not covered by ESP can have their bottom inspected by IWS during renewal surveys, provided they meet certain conditions.
- Conditions: Valid notation, suitable coating, thickness measurement, no repair work needed, and compliance with class requirements.
- One-time Measure: Vessels without notation can undergo a one-time IWS, obtaining the notation at the next dry-dock.
3. IWS Requirements
Vessel owners must request IWS from the office and RO, providing details of the survey. The IWS must be conducted in accordance with specific requirements, including:
- Survey Site: Protected location with calm, clear water.
- Survey Method: Closed-circuit television with two-way communication, monitored by the Surveyor.
- Survey Extent: Entire vessel below waterline, outside of shell plating above waterline, and exposed portions of appendages.
If a defect or deterioration is detected during IWS, the internal structure should be examined to clarify or confirm the findings.
