Virus Alert - EBOLA - Reg.
Key Changes and Requirements
1. Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Awareness
The recent EVD outbreak in West Africa is a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Seafarers and maritime industry personnel should be aware of the symptoms and risks associated with EVD.
- Symptoms: Fever, weakness, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and in some cases, bleeding.
- Risks: Direct contact with blood, secretions, organs, or other body fluids of infected living or dead persons or animals.
2. Precautionary Measures
Seafarers and passengers should seek medical attention at the first sign of illness if they have stayed in areas where EVD cases have been reported. Anyone with an illness consistent with EVD should not be allowed to join a ship or travel internationally.
- Hygiene: Practice careful hygiene, including thorough hand-washing.
- Information: All persons on board ships sailing in waters where persons of unknown origin may be found should be provided with timely and relevant information related to contact with any such individuals.
All concerned are advised to adhere to the IMO circular letter No. 3484 dated 2.9.2014 in letter and spirit for the benefit of the maritime community at large.
