Case of passenger jumping overboard from a passenger ship.

Applicable to: All Indian passenger ships
Effective Date: 15th May 2013
Superseded Circulars: None

Key Changes and Requirements

1. Incident Summary

On 2nd August 2011, a passenger jumped overboard from a passenger vessel in the Bay of Bengal. Despite search and rescue efforts, the passenger could not be saved due to inclement weather.

2. Lessons Learned

While the vessel's rescue efforts were commendable, the inclement weather hindered the operation. Releasing/inflating a liferaft near the passenger might have provided an additional chance of survival.

Safety Recommendations
  • 1. Ensure immediate and effective response to man overboard situations.
  • 2. Consider releasing/inflating liferafts when maneuvering close to the person overboard.
Important Note

All ships are advised to review and update their man overboard procedures and drills.
