Mandatory Verification of Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Certificate by Indian Port Authorities
Applicable to:
All merchant vessels of 300 GT and above
Effective Date:
Immediate
Superseded Circulars:
MSN 02 of 2015
Key Changes and Requirements
1. Verification of P&I Insurance Certificate
It is now mandatory for all vessels entering Indian ports to have their P&I Insurance Certificate verified by the port authorities.
- Vessel Owners/Operators: Ensure P&I Insurance Certificate is valid, verifiable online, and submitted to port authorities prior to arrival.
- Port Authorities: Verify P&I Insurance Certificate through official P&I insurer's website, ensuring it covers the entire port stay. If website verification fails, contact local correspondents.
- P&I Insurers: Update websites with real-time verification data, clearly indicate premium status and coverage duration. Non-IG P&I insurers have 6 months to comply.
II/4 P&I Insurance provides essential coverage for third-party liabilities, including loss of life, personal injury, cargo loss, pollution, wreck removal, collision, and damage to property.
Important Note
Any irregularities or suspicions concerning the authenticity or validity of the P&I Insurance Certificate must be reported to the Directorate General of Shipping immediately. Unresolved issues may prevent vessel entry into Indian ports or require vessels already in Indian waters to depart.
