What Seafarers Want From a Better News Experience

What Seafarers Want From a Better News Experience

Early insights from Navvyx’s seafarer news-needs survey

Staying informed at sea comes with practical challenges. Connectivity may be limited, data usage matters, and finding useful information can mean scrolling through irrelevant stories, advertisements, and repeated updates.

At Navvyx, we are exploring how digital products can be designed around the everyday realities of active seafarers.

Our early survey findings point towards one clear opportunity:

  • Seafarers do not simply need more news. They need news that is relevant, concise, reliable, and efficient to access.

News is already part of the daily routine

80% of respondents said they check news either once or twice a day or several times a day.

This suggests that news is already a regular part of life onboard. However, frequent usage does not necessarily mean the experience is convenient or efficient.

A better platform should help users find valuable information quickly, without unnecessary scrolling or data consumption.

Relevance matters

60% identified too much generic or irrelevant news as a problem with their current news experience.

For seafarers, irrelevant content can mean wasted time, additional data usage, and more effort spent finding stories that actually matter.

A personalized feed could help users focus on subjects such as maritime affairs, India, global news, technology, finance, sports, science, health, and lifestyle.

Personalization shows strong potential

86.7% rated automatically receiving news about selected topics as either very useful or extremely useful.

This indicates strong interest in a news experience where users can choose their topics and receive a more focused feed.

The goal is not to overwhelm users with more content. It is to reduce the effort required to discover relevant information.

Data usage cannot be an afterthought

53.3% identified high data consumption as a problem.

For a seafarer-focused platform, low-data usage should be a core product principle. This could include:

Short news summaries

Lightweight pages

Data-saver mode

Optional image loading

Existing habits matter

80% currently receive news and updates through WhatsApp groups. Google or Google News and Instagram or Facebook were each selected by 53.3%.

This means Navvyx must offer a clear reason to be used alongside existing platforms.

By combining better filtering, seafarer-specific information, reliable and clearly attributed sources, concise summaries, and lower data consumption, Navvyx aims to make staying informed more relevant and efficient for active seafarers.

What this means for Navvyx

The early findings suggest that a useful seafarer news platform should prioritize:

Relevant and personalized content

Concise, easy-to-read summaries

Reliable and clearly attributed sources

Low-data and offline functionality

User control over topics and preferences

These findings are guiding our next product experiments at Navvyx.

The objective is straightforward: build a news experience that respects the seafarer’s time, bandwidth, interests, and working environment.

Note: Percentages for questions allowing multiple selections may not total 100%.
