Key Changes and Requirements
1. Clarification on Trainee/Cadet Exemption — MLC, 2006
The Directorate General of Shipping clarifies that the provisions of MLC, 2006, as per Merchant Shipping (Maritime Labour) Rules, 2016, apply to trainees and cadets on Indian flag ships, with the following exceptions:
- a) Relaxation from Rule 12(3)(b) for extended service duration to complete sea time for certification.
- b) Exemption from social security measures as per Rule 22, following G.S.R. 232(E) issued on 10.3.2017.
II/4 Other provisions of MLC, 2006 apply to trainees/cadets.
