Key Changes and Requirements
1. Age Restrictions
DGS Order 6 of 2023 introduces age restrictions for Indian-flagged vessels to improve safety and environmental performance.
- Age Limit: 25 years for most vessel types, with exceptions for specialized vessels.
- Implementation: Phased implementation starting 2026-02-01, with a 3-year transition period.
2. Safety and Sustainability Index (SSI)
The order introduces an SSI to allow technically sound, environmentally compliant older vessels to continue operating under conditional extensions.
- Eligibility: Vessels that meet or exceed the SSI threshold can apply for extensions.
- Extension Period: Up to 5 years, subject to periodic reassessment.
II/4 Vessels over 25 years old may be required to undergo additional safety and environmental assessments.
Important Note
Non-compliance with age restrictions may result in vessel detention, loss of insurance coverage, and potential penalties under international regulations.
