Key Changes and Requirements

1. Recognition of Seagoing Service

The methodology for recognizing seagoing service for ratings forming part of a navigational/engine-room watch is outlined below.

  • 6 months on normal trading ships: 6 months on ships >500 GT or >750 KW Main Propulsion Machinery with Watch-keeping experience certificate, Training Record book, and verification letter/endorsement from a Recognized Private Shipping Company (RPSL).
  • Reduced rate for lower area/ smaller vessels: If service is on coastal/harbour vessels or <500 GT, then reduced rate (2/3 or 50%) applies as per META Manual Vol I.
  • Additional 6 months: If approved training is not documented in the Training Record Book.
  • Assessment and Examination: Existing seafarers without verifiable sea-going service can opt for assessment at the Maritime Training Institute (MTI) and examination by the Board of Examination for Seafarers Trust (BEST), with a maximum of 3 attempts.
