M. S. Notice 02 of 2012 - Prevention of Air Pollution-NOx Emissions limits for new engines-reg.
Key Changes and Requirements
1. NOx Emission Limits for New Engines
The MEPC agreed amendments confirm the proposed three-tier structure for new engines, depending on the date of installation:
- Tier I: 17.0 g/kWh (2000-2011)
- Tier II: 14.4 g/kWh (2011 onwards, outside ECA)
- Tier III: 3.4 g/kWh (2016 onwards, in ECA)
2. NOx Emission Limits for Existing Engines
Existing engines (>5000 kW, displacement ≥90L/cylinder, installed 1990-2000) must meet Tier I limits (17.0 g/kWh). If not, they must be upgraded to meet Tier I limits by the first renewal survey, with extensions available if the upgrading system is not yet commercially available.
3. RSV Category Vessels
Type 3 and Type 4 RSVs must comply with Tier II limits (2011 onwards), while Type 1 and Type 2 RSVs must comply with Tier I limits (2012 onwards).
Compliance with this circular is mandatory for the grant of a licence under section 406(3) of the M.S. Act, 1958, as amended.
