Key Changes and Requirements
1. Sea Service Requirements — for 2nd Mate (FG) certification
At least half of the total sea service requirement must be performed on foreign going or coastal trading vessels of 500 GT and above, engaged on voyages of 500 miles or more.
- Minimum: 6 months of supervised navigational watch keeping on such vessels
- Maximum: One third of total sea service at full rate, and one sixth at 2/3rd rate for non-trading vessels of 500 GT and above in foreign or coastal waters
2. Service on Non-Trading Vessels — assessment and limitations
Sea service on vessels of less than 500 GT is not assessed towards 2nd Mate (FG) certification.
Candidates may apply for assessment of sea service on non-trading vessels, but the issued CoC will have limitations regarding vessel type and/or area of operation.
To remove or modify limitations, candidates must serve 6 months on a dedicated foreign going trading vessel and pass an oral examination.
