Key Changes and Requirements
1. Safety Measures for Timber Logs Cargo
Timber logs may contain toxic gases due to chemical treatment or decomposition, posing a risk to stevedores and crew. Follow these safety measures:
- Declaration: Owners/Managers/Masters must declare to port authorities if logs were chemically treated, with substantiating certificates.
- Ventilation: If untreated, ensure holds are open and ventilated before work. If treated, ventilate holds for longer durations before permitting man entry.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Masters should keep self-contained breathing apparatus and other PPE ready for use.
- Education: Educate shore stevedores about potential toxic gases before starting work.
II/4 Methyl Bromide is very toxic and can cause immediate death on exposure.
